A devastating earthquake rocked Myanmar and Thailand on March 28, leaving widespread destruction and a rising death toll. The quake, which measured 7.2 on the Richter scale, has claimed over 1,002 lives in Myanmar alone, with more than 2,376 people injured and several missing.

Myanmar Declares State of Emergency

The Myanmar government has declared a state of emergency as rescue efforts intensify. The earthquake’s tremors were felt across five countries, including India, China, Nepal, and Afghanistan. Reports indicate that infrastructure in several cities has been severely damaged, with collapsed buildings, cracked roads, and widespread power outages.

India Steps Up with ‘Operation Brahma’

Responding to the crisis, India has launched ‘Operation Brahma’, sending 15 tons of relief materials to Myanmar. The Indian Air Force’s C-130J aircraft has transported emergency supplies, including:

  • Tents and sleeping bags
  • Medical kits with antibiotics and painkillers
  • Food supplies and clean drinking water
  • Solar lamps and generators

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed the aid mission, stating that India stands in full solidarity with Myanmar during this catastrophe.

Tremors Across Asia: Nepal, China, and Thailand Also Affected

The powerful earthquake was felt as far as Nepal, China, and Afghanistan. Myanmar’s second-largest city, Mandalay, reported significant structural damage, including the collapse of a major Buddhist monastery. Meanwhile, in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, a 33-story under-construction building crumbled, leaving 10 dead and 16 injured.

Aftershocks and Rising Death Toll

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has warned of strong aftershocks, which could further worsen the crisis. Initial estimates by USGS predict over 1,000 fatalities, while local reports indicate even higher numbers as rescue teams search for survivors under the rubble.

Urgent Need for Medical Aid

Hospitals in Myanmar are overwhelmed, with a critical shortage of blood supplies and essential medicines. The United Nations has pledged $5 million for immediate relief efforts, while countries like China and Russia have dispatched emergency response teams to assist in search and rescue missions.

Myanmar’s Worst Earthquake in Years

Experts are calling this one of the deadliest earthquakes in Myanmar’s history. The full scale of the disaster is yet to unfold, but with international aid pouring in and rescue operations in full swing, efforts are underway to prevent further loss of life.
