British luxury car company Bentley introduced its first fully electric car. The company has named its new electric SUV Torkal. Bentley’s focus on giving customers the electric car experience is clear, but the company has maintained the luxury and design it has been known for for more than 100 years.
Bentley’s entry comes at a time when luxury car companies are experimenting with their own approaches to electric vehicles. According to the company, customers don’t want to change the style of their favorite luxury car just because the petrol engine has been replaced by an electric motor.
The company has retained many design elements from its petrol and diesel models. The diamond shape lights provided in the SUV are particularly eye-catching. Its design is inspired by Bentley’s traditional front grille. Interestingly, the electric car does not need a conventional grill to cool the engine, yet the company has retained its old design identity.
Bentley has also tried to combine the car’s driving experience with its traditional models. The company has created a special sound to give the feeling of sound like a V8 engine. This includes the sound of the timpani, a large drum used in an orchestra. As the car accelerates, so does the sound of the small drum.
The Bentley Torcal S has become the company’s most powerful production car to date. It gets a dual-motor all-wheel drive system, which together generates 888 PS of power and a whopping 1,350 Nm of torque.
The effect of this power is also evident in its speed. This large SUV accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds. Its maximum speed is 260 km/h. Whereas, its standard version has 821 PS of power and 1,194 Nm of torque, which helps it reach 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds.
Bentley has provided a 113 kWh battery pack in the Torkal, which runs on 800V lithium-ion technology. The company claims that this electric SUV can cover a distance of up to 600 kilometers on a full charge.
It is supported with 400kW ultra-fast charging, to ensure that charging does not take too long during long journeys. According to the company, with the help of this, the battery is charged from 10 to 80 percent in just 16 minutes. Not only that, a range of around 160 kilometers can be achieved with just 7 minutes of charging.
Bentley’s first EV comes at a time when some are questioning the design of Ferrari’s first electric car. He said the new EV lacks Ferrari’s traditional sports car identity. Bentley has chosen a different path in this matter. Company CEO Frank-Stephen Walliser said his aim was to build the first Bentley. According to him, people don’t want a car that looks completely different because it’s electric.
According to the Bentley CEO, the Torcal is a car for the company that can connect more people with the Bentley brand and open doors to new markets.
The company has already started informing its current and potential customers about this electric SUV. It is getting good interest from those areas of Europe, Middle East and America, where the trend of electric car adoption is high. The marketing campaign for this will be launched in China next year. According to Bentley, about half of those interested in Torcal are already customers of the company. About 50 percent of people are interested in buying a Bentley for the first time.
Bentley has invested 350 million pounds, or about $465 million, in its plant in Crewe, UK, to produce Torkal. This new electric SUV will be manufactured at this plant. Bentley’s entry into the electric car comes at a time when many major investments in the auto industry are coming to Britain.
A few days before this, McLaren announced an investment of 500 million pounds in Britain, while Nissan also talked about investing 170 million pounds in the production of the new model. Britain’s Business Minister Jonathan Reynolds has described Bentley’s investment as a positive step for the automobile sector in the country.
Bentley previously planned to launch its first electric car in 2026. The company had once set a goal of becoming an all-electric brand by 2030. However, Bentley later changed this goal because, according to the company, its customers were not yet ready to switch to fully electric cars.
Now with Torcal, Bentley has made its debut in the electric segment. The company is trying to ensure that consumers embrace electric cars, but don’t have to compromise on Bentley’s old identity of luxury and design.
