A tussle has erupted within the ECI over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of the Election Commission of India (ECI). Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has been accused of alleged arbitrariness on behalf of two ECI commissioners. A media report claimed that the remaining two commissioners have objected 14 times in the last 10 months against the decisions taken by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Both Commissioner Dr. Vivek Joshi and Dr. SS Sandhu has raised a written objection.

Dr.Sandhu has been the Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand, passed UPSC after MBBS.

ECI Election Commissioner Dr. SS Sandhu’s full name is Sukhbir Singh Sandhu. Sandhu hails from Punjab, but is a retired IAS officer of the Uttarakhand cadre. Born in 1963, Sandhu is a 1998 batch IAS officer of the Uttarakhand cadre. He has done MBBS from Government Medical College, Amritsar. So, he has an MA in History from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar and also holds a degree in Law. Dr. Sandhu was made Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand in 2021. He held the position till his retirement in 2024. He was made the Election Commissioner in March 2024.

Dr. Sandhu has also been the Chairman of NHAI. He has also served as Additional Secretary in the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (then Ministry of Human Resources). Dr. Sandhu Kosal has received the President’s Medal for meritorious service in the 2001 Census.

Dr. Vivek Joshi has been the Chief Secretary of Haryana.

Election Commissioner in ECI, Dr. Vivek Joshi is a retired IAS officer of Haryana cadre. He is a 1989 batch IAS officer. Dr. Vivek Joshi took charge as Election Commissioner in Election Commission in February 2025. Before this he was serving as Chief Secretary in Haryana. So during his 35 years of service, Dr. Vivek Joshi has worked as a Secretary in the Department of Personnel and Training. He has also served in important positions in the ministries of textiles, women and child development, finance etc. While he has served as Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India. With this, Dr. Joshi has also served as a member on the Board of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and State Bank of India (SBI). Dr. Joshi completed his BE degree in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Roorkee in 1987. He holds a PhD in International Economics from the Graduate Institute, Geneva (Switzerland). Dr. Joshi is the elder brother of Vineet Joshi, a 1992 batch IAS officer of the Manipur cadre, who was the former chairman of the NTA.
