Two new MTech-PhD courses will be launched in IIIT, admission will be through GATE.

Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) is gearing up to launch two new MTech-PhD dual degree programs combining study and research. The institute has proposed to launch these courses in Biomedical Analytics and Engineering and Quantum Information and Technology. Both the programs will be run under the Department of Applied Science. It is planned to start admission from the academic year 2027-28. The special thing is that admission to this course will be given on the basis of GATE score. Students will have the opportunity to pursue PhD after MTech and research in emerging technology areas.

The institute has proposed to start admission to these programs from the academic session 2027-28. The proposal has now been sent to the Board of Governors for final approval. Earlier, both the courses had received approval from the Senate.

First research opportunity in MTech and then Ph.D

The special feature of these dual degree programs will be that students will be able to pursue PhD research along with their studies. As per the proposed system students will be taught MTech in the first year. After this, from the second year they can take admission in PhD and start research work in their chosen field. Scholarship is proposed to be given to students during the first year of M.Tech. Also, a system has been suggested to get the benefit of research scholarship as per rule even after reaching the PhD round.

Preparation for admission to 40 seats

According to the institute, 15 seats are offered in biomedical analytics and engineering and 25 seats in quantum information and technology. In this way preparations are going on for admission to a total of 40 seats in both the programs. Admission to both these courses will be based on GATE score. This will provide students studying engineering and science subjects with the opportunity to gain expertise in new and rapidly developing fields.

Senate approved

The Department of Applied Science laid before the Senate the proposed curriculum of both the new programs. The Senate has approved the courses. Now the final approval of the Board of Governors is required to start the program. After approval, admission process to both these MTech-PhD programs can be started from 2027-28 session.
