The Ministry of Finance has informed that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has allowed all bank branches, offices, branches connected to ATMs and currency chests to be fully functional on Sunday i.e. 27th September. The notification comes after the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) proposed a three-day nationwide bank strike from September 28 to 30, 2026. The strike is going to start immediately after the holiday weekend of September 26 and 27. The notification said that the government has taken necessary steps to address the banking needs of the citizens and all public sector banks and regional rural banks will function normally on Sunday, September 27, 2026.

What is in the notification?

It said that to ensure that the banking needs of the people are not affected for long, all public sector banks and regional rural banks will function normally on Sunday, September 27, 2026. The Reserve Bank of India has allowed all bank branches, offices, branches with ATMs and currency chests to become fully operational from 27.2026.2026. The government reiterated that the welfare and convenience of bank customers is its top priority.

The ministry said the government and bank management have appealed to the unions to postpone the proposed strike and have also taken steps to ensure that essential banking services continue without any disruption. For the convenience of customers, State Bank of India (SBI), Bank of Baroda and Canara Bank have also advised customers to complete their essential banking transactions before the proposed bank strike. Banks urged customers to use digital and self-service channels during the strike.

Will banks remain closed for 5 days?

The government has averted five consecutive days of bank closures by allowing bank branches, currency chests, bank offices and branches attached to ATMs to remain open on Sunday, September 27. The Finance Ministry had earlier appealed to the bank employees to call off the proposed strike and settle their outstanding demands through dialogue. UFBU is demanding implementation of five-day working week mainly in the banking sector. The bank strike coincides with the half-yearly closure of banks on September 30, an important date for provisioning, settlement, treasury operations and other financial activities.
