When you clear ChatGPT history, is everything really deleted? Learn how the system works

We have many types of conversations on ChatGPT. Sometimes they seek answers to some questions, and sometimes they seek help related to work or studies. Some of these chats are ones we want to revisit later, while some we like to remove from history.

In ChatGPT, there are various options available for this like Delete and Archive. But what is the difference between these two? What happens to a chat after it is deleted and can it be brought back? If you have such questions in your mind then know complete information here.

How to delete a chat in ChatGPT?

If you want to remove any ChatGPT conversation from history, the method is quite simple. First, open ChatGPT and find the chat you want to delete in the sidebar. Now click or tap on the three dots that appear near the chat name. Here you will get Delete option. Select it and confirm to delete the chat.

After this the conversation will disappear from your chat history. That means it will not appear in the sidebar as before. But remember, deleting and archiving a chat are two different things.

Where does the data go when you delete a chat?

According to OpenAI, when you delete a chat in ChatGPT, it is immediately removed from your chat history. It is then scheduled for permanent removal from the system within 30 days. An important point is that deleted conversations cannot be recovered through ChatGPT’s interface, API or support. So, if a chat contains information that you want to use further, think before deleting it. However, if the conversation does not appear in your history, it does not mean that it has been deleted. You may have archived it.

How to view archived chats in ChatGPT?

When archived, the chat is removed from your general history, but saved to the account. So, if necessary, you can see it again or bring it back to the chat history. For this open the settings of ChatGPT. Then go to Data Control section. Here click or tap on the Manage option given in front of Archived chat.

Now a list of archived chats will appear in front of you. You can use the unarchive option by selecting the conversation you want to bring back. After this the chat will start reappearing in your history.

How to export ChatGPT data?

If you want to keep your ChatGPT conversations and account data, there is also an option to export them. For this, go to settings and open data control section. Here you can export your data by selecting the Export Data option.

Keep in mind, exporting data and deleting chats are different things. Once a chat is deleted, it cannot be recovered. So, it is better to save important conversations before deleting them.
