DU’s SOL registers nationality of Indian students as Nepali, creates uproar, matter reaches Vice Chancellor

Delhi University’s (DU) School of Open Learning (SOL) administration mess is in the news these days. DU’s SOL has wrongly recorded the nationality of many students in its records, leading to the nationality of many Indian students being recorded as Nepali. After the record became public, the uproar started. The students of SOL have protested against this malpractice and the matter has reached the Vice Chancellor. The SOL students’ organization Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS) has submitted a memorandum to the Vice Chancellor in this regard.

Citizenship changed in student profile

The Revolutionary Youth Organization (KYS) yesterday submitted a memorandum to the DU Vice-Chancellor regarding the alleged irregularities in the School of Open Learning (SOL). In the memorandum, KYS alleged that the SOL student profile was reflecting wrong nationality. KYS alleged that the identity of Indian students studying in SOL is being shown as another nationality (Nepali).

KYS has said that such an error in official academic records is not a minor technical error. Nationalism is a sensitive and fundamental statement of identity. Any mistake in this may cause any student to face unnecessary trouble, embarrassment and serious problems in academic and administrative processes. The evidence has been given to the university administration.

Incorrect record should be corrected immediately

KYS has said that it is extremely worrisome that university institutions responsible for maintaining official records of students are making such a fundamental and serious mistake without any investigation.

KYS has demanded that the incorrect nationality details be corrected immediately and the official records of the students updated in all relevant databases of the University and SOL. Students should not face any kind of trouble, repeated verification or bad result due to this administrative error.

Demand a written apology from the SOL and action against the culprits

SOL has said in the demand letter that where and how this error occurred should also be investigated and strict action should be taken by determining the responsibility for this error. In addition, a proper system should be put in place to ensure that the personal and identifying information of students is entered correctly. Also, KYS has demanded a written apology from the SOL administration for jeopardizing the future of the students.
