Mater Dei football overcame a slow start and a six-point halftime deficit Friday night, rallying for a 10-9 victory over Corona Centennial at the Santa Ana Bowl. The Monarchs forced two crucial fourth-quarter turnovers and turned the second one into the go-ahead touchdown with less than seven minutes remaining.
The win moved Mater Dei to 4-0 on the season, while Corona Centennial fell to 1-2. The Monarchs now turn their attention to a matchup with Bishop Gorman next week.
Corona Centennial controlled the opening quarter, scoring on its first possession when Kenny Leggett took an end-around into the end zone from inside the 5-yard line.
Mater Dei struggled to generate offense early and went the entire first quarter without recording a first down. The Monarchs also surrendered a safety after a snap sailed over their punter’s head and into the end zone, leaving Centennial with a 9-0 advantage.
Freshman quarterback Paytyn Guess entered the game in the second quarter. Mater Dei eventually got on the scoreboard when Jerry Shifman connected on a 34-yard field goal with 34 seconds remaining before halftime.
Centennial carried a 9-3 lead into halftime, and neither team scored in the third quarter. No team entered the red zone during the period.
The turning point came in the fourth quarter. With Centennial leading 9-3 and 10 minutes remaining, Mater Dei recovered a fumble at midfield.
The Monarchs then forced another turnover when Michael Davis intercepted a shuffle pass, giving Mater Dei possession deep in Centennial territory.
Russell Sekona finished the ensuing drive with a 2-yard quarterback sneak, putting Mater Dei ahead 10-9 with 6:58 left.
Centennial had an opportunity to regain the lead late in the game, but a 27-yard field-goal attempt with 2:35 remaining missed. Mater Dei then converted a third-down pass from Guess to Gavin Honore to secure the victory.
The narrow result gave Mater Dei football its fourth straight win and capped a comeback in which its defense produced the decisive plays when the game was on the line.
