Who is this woman, whose husband Trump will take action to free him from Chinese imprisonment?

US President Donald Trump is going to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping this week. The issue of the release of the American citizen may also arise in this meeting. The case concerns American expert Yulin Chen, who has been imprisoned in China since November 2024.

Chen’s wife, Yufang Rong, said on Tuesday that the White House had assured her that Trump would demand her husband’s release in front of Xi Jinping. Rong fears that China may file a case accusing her husband of espionage.

Who is Yufang Rong?

Yufang Rong is the wife of Yulin Chen. Her husband works as a seismologist in America. Chen’s work deals with detecting North Korea’s underground nuclear tests.

Chen became an American citizen in 2011 and lives in the Boston area. His research project received funding from the US State Department and the US Air Force Research Laboratory. Rong says her husband’s research was based on public data and he worked closely with Chinese scientists.

Yulin Chen was arrested at Beijing International Airport on November 5, 2024. At that time he met his family and was returning to America after lecturing at two universities.

According to Rong, her husband has been interrogated more than 100 times. US embassy officials get permission to meet him about once a month. These meetings are also held in the presence of Chinese officials.

Rong said she is also concerned about Chen’s medical care and food. According to him, Chen is suffering from high blood pressure and diabetes.

Why hope from Trump?

Chen is one of two American citizens who have been granted US citizenship. Believes to have been wrongfully detained. Another case is Min Jin, who was arrested in June. Rong said he met with State Department and National Security Council officials at the White House on Tuesday. Meanwhile, he was told that Trump would raise the issue of Chen’s release with Jinping.

According to Rong, Trump also raised the issue of her husband with Xi during a visit to China in May, but there was no result at the time. Rong said that if she had the chance to meet her husband, she would just tell him, “Stay strong. Have hope. There are so many people helping you. You will definitely come back.”
