Paige Bueckers has made a smooth transition to the international stage, helping Team USA advance to the semifinals of the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin while making an impact beyond her scoring numbers.
Bueckers is averaging 9.5 points per game while shooting 57% from the field, according to FIBA statistics. Her ability to contribute efficiently alongside some of the world’s best players has become one of the notable features of the U.S. team’s run.
Bueckers entered the World Cup with considerable experience playing a lead role, but Team USA gives her a different challenge. Rather than being asked to control every possession, she is playing alongside established stars and adjusting to a deeper roster.
That adjustment has been particularly effective because of her shot selection and ability to recognize when to attack.
Former UConn stars Renee Montgomery and Tina Charles, who are covering the tournament as TNT Sports analysts, highlighted Bueckers’ poise and decision-making. Montgomery said Bueckers’ overall game translates well to international basketball, while Charles pointed to her maturity in recognizing when to take her opportunities and when to allow teammates to lead.
Those qualities have allowed Bueckers to remain productive without needing a high volume of shots.
Bueckers’ tournament statistics illustrate why her value cannot be measured solely by points.
FIBA lists her with 9.5 points, 1.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game entering the latest stage of the competition. She has also been efficient from the field, giving Team USA another reliable perimeter option.
In the quarterfinal against Hungary, Bueckers scored seven points but needed only four field-goal attempts to do it. She also contributed three assists and a steal as the United States cruised to a 108-56 victory and secured a place in the semifinals.
That performance illustrates an important part of her role: she does not have to be the team’s leading scorer to influence the game.
Bueckers is also part of a significant UConn presence on the U.S. roster.
She has been joined by former Huskies stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, with the trio among Team USA’s leading scorers during the tournament. Collier has been the team’s only player averaging more than 10 points per game, while Stewart has posted the team’s highest efficiency rating, according to the report.
The broader UConn connection extends beyond the American roster. France’s Gabby Williams, another former UConn player, has also emerged as one of the tournament’s leading performers, averaging 17.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game.
The 2026 World Cup is not Bueckers’ first experience with USA Basketball.
FIBA records show that she previously represented the United States at the FIBA U17 and U19 Women’s Basketball World Cups. She returned to the senior national team during the 2026 World Cup qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico, where she averaged 10.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists across five games.
That international background has given Bueckers familiarity with playing different styles of basketball and competing alongside players she normally faces at the collegiate or professional level.
With Team USA through to the semifinals, Bueckers’ ability to contribute efficiently could remain important as the competition becomes more demanding.
Her role may fluctuate from game to game depending on matchups and the production of her teammates. But the early evidence from Berlin suggests that Bueckers does not need to dominate the ball to remain valuable.
For a player entering an increasingly prominent stage of her career, the World Cup provides another opportunity to demonstrate that her strengths extend beyond scoring. Her efficiency, passing, decision-making and willingness to play within a talented lineup have helped make her a natural fit for Team USA.
The result is a version of Paige Bueckers that looks comfortable in a role where every possession does not have to run through her — a potentially important development as she continues to establish herself at the highest levels of women’s basketball.
