Sandra Bullock is bringing a personal touch to her return as Sally Owens in “Practical Magic 2.” The actress revealed that her two children have subtle appearances in the long-awaited sequel, though they may be difficult for viewers — and even the children themselves — to spot.

Bullock made the revelation ahead of the film’s theatrical release, as she and Nicole Kidman reunite as the witch sisters Sally and Gillian Owens. “Practical Magic 2” is scheduled to hit theaters Sept. 10.

The cameo revelation comes as Bullock and Kidman revisit a movie that has undergone a remarkable change in reputation since the original “Practical Magic” was released in 1998.

Sandra Bullock’s Kids Have Hidden Roles

Bullock said her children appear in the sequel but not in an obvious way. She also said they do not know exactly where their appearances occur, leaving the details of their cameos for them to discover.

The actress has spoken about involving her children in the creative process in another way, too. Before making the sequel, Bullock watched the original film with her children and their friends because she wanted to see how a younger generation responded to the story.

That perspective mattered to Bullock as the new film introduces a younger generation of Owens women. Joey King and Maisie Williams play Kylie and Antonia Owens, the daughters of Sally.

‘Practical Magic’ Found a New Audience

The original “Practical Magic” was not an immediate box-office success. It received mixed reviews in 1998 but eventually developed a devoted following, helped in part by a new generation discovering the film through social media.

Bullock has said she once carried a sense of shame over the movie’s initial reception. Looking back nearly three decades later, she believes the film was simply ahead of its time.

Kidman has also witnessed the shift firsthand. She said people began telling her that “Practical Magic” was their favorite movie of hers, prompting her to recognize how strongly the film had resonated with audiences over time.

Bullock and Kidman Return as the Owens Sisters

“Practical Magic 2” reunites Bullock and Kidman as the Owens sisters and continues the family story inspired by Alice Hoffman’s novels. The original 1998 movie was based on Hoffman’s 1995 novel “Practical Magic,” while the sequel draws inspiration from her 2021 book “The Book of Magic.”

Bullock and Kidman also serve as producers on the sequel. Among the production challenges was recreating the Owens family home, which was rebuilt as a full structure on a London back lot rather than using the temporary exterior constructed for the original film.

With “Practical Magic 2” nearing its theatrical debut, Bullock is returning to a character and franchise that have taken an unexpectedly long path from modest beginnings to cult status — now with a new generation of Owens women ready to carry the story forward.
