Loud music in the car can be fined, know what the rules say?

It is common to listen to songs in the car during long journeys or driving. Many people play loud music to make the journey enjoyable. Some people open the car windows and play loud songs, while many people even install modified music systems with high-bass and large speakers, but doing so can get you into trouble.

Violations related to loud music and noise may be punished under separate rules. Under Section 190 (2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, a fine ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000 is provided for first time violation of noise pollution and road safety norms. If driving is affected due to loud music and the police consider it to be dangerous driving, action can also be taken under Section 184. However, the amount of penalty may vary from state to state and union territory.

Extra caution in the silence zone

Areas around hospitals, schools, colleges and courts can be marked as silence zones. Noise regulations are stricter in such areas. The noise limit in the silence zone has been kept at 50 decibels during the day and 40 decibels at night. Action can be taken if car music is heard loudly outside.

A modified music system can also be the cause

The music system offered by the company is usually installed as per the prescribed standards of the vehicle. Problems can arise when the sound system is turned up too loud by installing large amplifiers, subwoofers and additional speakers in the car. Before doing any kind of modification in the car it is necessary to check whether the vehicle is compliant with the rules or not. Changes that violate the rules can be prosecuted by the police and separate challans can also be issued.

What to do to avoid currency?

Keep the volume of music in the car low enough that it does not disturb people on the road outside. It is also better to keep the windows closed while listening to music. Turn off the music or turn the volume down to a very low level, especially when passing through a silence zone. Also, don’t play music so loud while driving that you can’t hear the horns of nearby vehicles or the sirens of emergency vehicles. For safe driving, it is important to pay attention to road noise and surrounding conditions.
