Maruti Suzuki’s Green Mission in Auto Sector Intensifies, First Green Hydrogen Plant Starts in Manesar

Maruti Suzuki India has commissioned a 300 kW green hydrogen plant at its Manesar plant. This is the first such plant for the company which aims to reduce dependence on petrol, diesel and other fossil fuels while manufacturing cars. The company will utilize solar power saved during holidays in this plant. Green hydrogen will be produced from this electricity. To explain you in simple language, when Manesar factory has less work and solar energy is saved, instead of wasting that electricity, hydrogen will be produced from it.

How will this plant work?

The surplus electricity from the solar plant installed at the Manesar factory will be used to produce green hydrogen. A 300 kilowatt electrolyser will be installed for this. The hydrogen produced will be stored. After this, it will be mixed with natural gas and used as fuel in the factory. This means that green hydrogen will also be available from cars used in the production process.

A major benefit of this will be that the solar power saved during the holidays can be put to better use. The company will first learn from this project and then plans to scale up the use of green hydrogen in its other factories in Haryana and Gujarat.

Maruti Suzuki’s big focus on green energy

Green hydrogen is not the only project that Maruti Suzuki is working on. The company is working on several options like solar power, green electricity, biogas and battery storage in car manufacturing factories.

A plant producing 10 tonnes of biogas per day is being installed in the Ghorghoda plant of the company. Apart from this, a 1 MWh battery energy storage system has also been commissioned there. The board of Maruti Suzuki has decided to invest Rs. It has also approved four compact biogas projects with a budget of Rs 561 crore. The company said in June that it plans to spend about Rs 925 crore on green energy-related works by fiscal 2030-31. Biogas project is also included in this.

Ambitious target to reduce pollution by 2030-31

Maruti Suzuki also wants to significantly reduce carbon emissions from its car manufacturing plants. According to the company, currently around 6.15 lakh tonnes of carbon is emitted from the production. The company aims to reduce it to 2.66 lakh tonnes by FY 2030-31. This means that the use of clean energy sources such as solar energy, green hydrogen, biogas and batteries will be increased in factories in the coming years instead of petroleum fuels.

According to Hisashi Takeuchi, MD and CEO of Maruti Suzuki, in the future, the strength of the company will not be determined by low prices and good quality alone. It will be equally important to know how much carbon is emitted while manufacturing the car in the factory. The 300 kW green hydrogen plant commissioned in Manesar is the company’s first major step in this direction.
