Budget 2027-28 countdown begins! The month-long pre-budget meetings will begin from October 12

The Finance Ministry has started official preparations for the Union Budget 2027-28. In this order, the schedule of pre-budget meetings for the month running from 12th October to 13th November has been released. The main objective of these meetings, chaired by the Secretary, Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, is to finalize the Revised Estimates (RE) for the current financial year 2026-27 and the Budget Estimates (BE) for the next financial year 2027-28.

The ministry has directed all Union ministries and departments to submit their required financial data and expenditure proposals by October 6. This time the main focus of the government will be on curbing wasteful expenditure, increasing non-tax revenue and rational allocation of welfare schemes. The budget, to be presented on February 1, 2027, will be the fourth budget of the Modi 3.0 government and the 10th consecutive budget of the finance minister, which will play an important role in determining the direction of the country’s economic growth and fiscal discipline.

Preparations will start from October 12

As part of the preparations for the Union Budget 2027-28, the Finance Ministry will begin a month-long pre-budget meeting from October 12. In a notice issued on September 23, the ministry’s budget department said pre-budget discussions under the chairmanship of the Expenditure Secretary will begin from October 12 to finalize the revised estimates for the financial year 2026-27 and the budget estimates for 2027-28 in terms of grants and appropriations. This information has been sent to all Ministries and Departments. In which the program of meetings to be held with the expenditure department has been given. The ministry said that the program has been designed keeping in view various needs and is being rolled out well in advance.

The meetings will continue till November 13

According to the information, the ministries and departments have to submit the required information for the meetings by October 6, 2026. As per the fixed schedule, these meetings will continue till November 13. The budget estimates for the financial year 2027-28 will be tentatively finalized after the completion of the pre-budget meetings. The budget for the financial year 2027-28 is likely to be presented on February 1. This will be the fourth budget of the third term of the Narendra Modi government and the tenth consecutive budget of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The budget for the next financial year is expected to focus on measures to boost job creation and domestic demand, along with advancing reforms to further boost economic growth.
