Established in 1987, the fourth oldest university in the country

The University of Allahabad was established on 23 September 1987 through the efforts of Sir William Muir, the Lieutenant Governor of the United Provinces. This is the fourth modern university of the country. Earlier, universities were established in Calcutta, Bombay and Madras. It was previously functioning as Muir Central College, founded in 1872. Central University to be created in 2025, what has changed since then?

Allahabad University was granted the status of a Central University by the Government of India on 14 July 2025. After becoming a central university, Allahabad University has seen many changes. NAAC A+ Grade: After becoming a Central University, Allahabad University has seen an educational improvement. So the university has also got national ranking in this regard. NAAC has given the university an A+ grade. When the Central University first adopted the new Education Policy 2020, it has been important for academic reforms.

Appointment: After the formation of the Central University, a large number of appointments have been made to Allahabad University. In the last decade alone, 400 new teachers have been appointed, more than 280 teachers have been promoted and 636 non-teaching staff have been recruited.

Budget and Infrastructure Development: After becoming a central university, the budget received by Allahabad University has increased. New infrastructure is being developed in this university. These include newly developed central block of Muir Central College, new day-care center in science faculty, modern labs, digitization of central library.
