Dabo Swinney Defends Mike Norvell After Plane Flies ‘Fire Novell’ Banner Over Florida State Stadium

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney criticized a plane banner targeting Florida State coach Mike Norvell before Saturday night’s matchup between the Seminoles and Tigers, calling the protest embarrassing and disrespectful.

The banner flew over Doak S. Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on October 31, hours before Florida State hosted Clemson. It demanded the firing of Norvell and Florida State Board of Trustees Chairman Peter Collins.

However, the message included a noticeable spelling mistake. Instead of writing Norvell’s name correctly, the banner read, “Fire Novell.”

Swinney addressed the incident after Clemson defeated Florida State 36-24, making it clear that he disagreed with the way the protest targeted the opposing coach.

Dabo Swinney Calls Mike Norvell Banner Disrespectful

Speaking after the game, Swinney described the plane protest as embarrassing for Florida State and said the message showed a lack of respect for Norvell.

“That was embarrassing. Florida State’s better than that,” Swinney said. He also pointed out that the organizers had misspelled the coach’s last name.

The Clemson coach went further, defending Norvell’s character and criticizing the growing hostility directed toward college football coaches when their teams struggle.

“Mike Norvell is a good man. He ain’t gonna say it, but I’m gonna,” Swinney said, adding that those responsible for the banner should be ashamed.

Swinney also questioned why criticism of a team’s results had increasingly turned into personal attacks against coaches.

Clemson Defeats Florida State 36-24 as Pressure Mounts on Norvell

The banner incident came during a difficult period for Florida State. The Seminoles entered the Clemson matchup at 3-4 overall and 1-3 in ACC play after consecutive losses to Louisville and Miami.

Things did not improve on Halloween night. Clemson controlled much of the contest and carried a 26-10 advantage into the fourth quarter before Florida State scored 14 points in the final period.

The Tigers ultimately secured a 36-24 victory, extending Florida State’s losing streak to three games. The result dropped the Seminoles to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

The defeat added further pressure on Norvell, whose future has remained a major talking point among Florida State supporters.

Florida State Fans Express Frustration With Mike Norvell

The plane protest reflected growing frustration among Seminoles fans following several disappointing seasons. Supporters have increasingly questioned the direction of the football program and whether the current coaching leadership can restore its previous success.

Norvell took over as Florida State’s head coach in 2020. His most successful season came in 2023, when the Seminoles finished the regular season undefeated at 13-0 and won the ACC championship.

However, the program experienced a dramatic decline afterward. Florida State finished 2-10 in 2024 and 5-7 in 2025 before beginning the 2026 campaign with another difficult stretch.

University president Richard McCullough had also addressed the growing concerns in a public letter earlier in the week, acknowledging that the program’s results had not met expectations.

His statement came amid wider questions about the university’s plans for the football program and its athletic department leadership.

Mike Norvell’s Buyout Could Complicate Florida State’s Decision

One major factor surrounding Norvell’s future is the financial cost of ending his contract early.

The Florida State coach signed an eight-year contract extension before the 2024 season, reportedly worth more than $84 million and running through 2031.

According to On3’s reporting, Florida State could owe Norvell approximately $51 million if the university dismisses him before the end of the 2026 season.

That potential financial commitment makes any coaching decision particularly significant for the university.

Meanwhile, Florida State faces a challenging schedule to close the regular season. The Seminoles are scheduled to travel to Boston College and Pittsburgh before hosting NC State and Florida.

Clemson’s victory moved the Tigers to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in ACC play, while Swinney’s postgame comments brought additional attention to the growing pressure surrounding Florida State’s head coach.
