Chicago Fire delivered a major setback to the Colorado Rapids’ MLS playoff campaign with a 4-2 victory on Saturday, October 31. Robert Lewandowski came off the bench and contributed an assist as Chicago secured an important road win.
The result was particularly damaging for Colorado, which entered the match needing points to strengthen its position in the Western Conference playoff race. Chicago, meanwhile, had already secured a place in the 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs.
The match at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park featured six goals, with Chicago producing a strong attacking performance to take all three points.
Chicago Fire Beat Colorado Rapids 4-2 in MLS Clash
Colorado started positively and opened the scoring through Morgan Whittaker in the 22nd minute. The home side looked to use its advantage and maintain pressure against the visiting team.
Chicago responded before halftime, with Jonathan Bamba finding the net in the 41st minute. The equalizer shifted momentum toward the visitors heading into the break.
Bamba scored again in the 56th minute, giving Chicago the lead. Colorado responded through Paxten Aaronson in the 58th minute, bringing the score to 2-2.
However, the Rapids could not maintain that momentum. Chicago regained control during the closing stages and found two more goals to secure a convincing victory.
Robert Lewandowski Makes an Impact Off the Bench
Robert Lewandowski started the match among Chicago’s substitutes, with head coach Gregg Berhalter introducing the experienced striker in the 63rd minute.
The Polish forward made his presence felt shortly after entering the game. In the 74th minute, he provided an assist for Philip Zinckernagel, who extended Chicago’s advantage.
Lewandowski contributed again in the 88th minute, setting up Puso Dithejane for Chicago’s fourth goal. His involvement helped the visitors finish the contest strongly.
Although the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich striker did not score, his two assists demonstrated his ability to influence the game even without starting.
Colorado Rapids Face Increased Pressure in Playoff Race
The defeat came at an important stage of Colorado’s season. The Rapids entered the contest sitting seventh in the Western Conference, with several teams still competing for postseason qualification.
Before the match, Colorado had gone five consecutive MLS games without a defeat. That run included draws against San Jose and Minnesota, along with victories that helped strengthen its playoff position.
Head coach Matt Wells had previously stressed that the team’s postseason chances remained in its own hands. However, losing at home against Chicago made the remaining fixtures even more important.
The Rapids now have less room for mistakes as the regular season approaches its final matchday.
Chicago Fire Maintain Momentum Ahead of MLS Playoffs
Chicago Fire entered the Colorado fixture after earning a 2-2 draw against Orlando City. The team had already confirmed its place in the 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs but remained interested in protecting its position in the Eastern Conference standings.
Lewandowski has been one of the club’s major attacking additions since arriving from Barcelona in July 2026. His experience in European football has brought additional attention to Chicago’s playoff campaign.
The Polish international has also had to deal with a recent scoring drought in MLS. Before the Colorado match, he had gone eight consecutive league appearances without finding the net.
While he did not end that run against the Rapids, his two assists provided an important contribution to Chicago’s attacking performance.
