There is a huge difference between the old Thar and the new Thar OG! These 8 mechanical changes make the SUV even more special

Mahindra & Mahindra has given its 3-door Thar a major update and launched it as the Thar OG. Its starting price has been kept at 10.32 lakh rupees. Visually, this SUV looks similar to the previous Thar, but the interior has undergone major changes. A lot of work has been done especially on its engine, suspension, chassis and other mechanical parts.

The Thar OG is offered in three variants namely LXT, AXT and ZXT. It will have three engine options. Customers can choose between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive depending on their needs and the variant. It is priced between Rs 10.32 lakh to Rs 17.75 lakh (ex-showroom).

The new Thar also gets some changes from the outside. It gets a new grille, newly designed alloy wheels and changed front and rear bumpers. New features have also been added in different variants. Its delivery is going to start from October 11. This time the company has not only worked on the looks and features, but has also made major changes to the mechanical parts inside the SUV.

Mahindra Thar OG: New Platform

The new Thar OG is now built on Mahindra’s M_Glyde 4G platform. The same platform is also used in Thar Rocks. According to the company, the new platform is more robust than before. This will not only provide better control while driving the SUV on the road but will also help in off-roading.

Mahindra Thar OG: Major change in suspension

The Thar OG gets a new penta-link suspension at the rear, which also includes a Watts link. The same setup is also found in Thar Rockx and Scorpio-N. This change can help make the SUV more comfortable on the road and provide better control on curves or rough roads.

Mahindra Thar OG: The suspension will automatically change its setup

DAVINCI Damping Technology is also offered in Thar OG. It uses frequency dependent damping i.e. FDD system. If you understand in simple language, this system can change the damping according to the road conditions and how much the suspension is moving. This can provide more comfort while driving on bad roads and also better control of the vehicle. The special thing is that it does not require any sensor or electronic system. This technology was first seen in the XUV 7XO.

Mahindra Thar OG: More powerful engine than ever

As before, the Thar OG has three engine options, but the bigger engine has been boosted in power. The 2.0-litre mStallion turbo petrol engine now generates 160 bhp of power and 330 Nm of torque. While the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine generates 150 bhp of power and 330 Nm of torque. Apart from this, the 1.5-litre diesel engine continues to produce 116 bhp of power and 300 Nm of torque. That means customers can choose their preferred option from both petrol and diesel engines.

Mahindra Thar OG: A big update in safety too

Thar OG has also been modified in terms of security. It has 6 airbags for front and rear passengers. Apart from this, disc brakes on all four wheels are available across the range. Features like TPMS and rear-view camera to check tire pressure are also available in the upper ZXT variants.

Mahindra Thar OG: Electric power steering for the first time

Electric power steering is offered for the first time in the new Thar OG. Earlier, hydraulic power steering was available in Thar. The biggest benefit of the new steering can be seen at low speeds. Steering will be easier to turn while parking in the city or maneuvering the car in tight spaces. This means that for daily commuters in the city, driving can be easier than ever.

Mahindra Thar OG: Locking differential also changed

For off-roading, the Thar OG is provided with an electronically working locking differential. It has replaced the old mechanical system. Along with this, the SUV has been given terrain modes like snow, sand and mud. Apart from this, Zip and Zoom drive modes are also available. With the help of these modes, the driving setup of the SUV can be changed according to different types of roads and routes.

Mahindra Thar OG: Biggest 19-inch wheels ever

The new Thar OG has a wider track than before. Its front and rear bumpers have also been modified. New design alloy wheels are also available. Its upper variant gets 19-inch alloy wheels. These are the largest wheels fitted on the Thar. Due to which the SUV looks more powerful than before.
