Josh Hartnett is facing a terrifying threat from beneath the waves in Netflix’s new thriller series Below, which has unveiled its official trailer ahead of its October premiere. Josh Hartnett stars as a Newfoundland fisherman forced to protect his family and community after a mysterious sea creature begins terrorizing the coastal town.

The six-episode limited series comes from Jesse McKeown, a creator and writer associated with The Umbrella Academy. Hartnett plays Calvin Penney, a fisherman haunted by his father’s mysterious death who finds himself at the center of a growing supernatural mystery.

The trailer introduces a remote Newfoundland community thrown into chaos after an unidentified creature emerges from the surrounding waters. Calvin works with marine researcher Fonda Howander, played by Mackenzie Davis, as they attempt to understand the threat and uncover secrets connected to the island.

Charlie Heaton plays Calvin’s son Wade, while Ruby Stokes, Rohan Campbell, Willow Kean and Kaleb Horn also star in the series.

Hartnett’s character is described as a stubborn but big-hearted fisherman who is determined to keep his family and close-knit community together as the strange events escalate.

The story combines the creature threat with Calvin’s personal history, including the unresolved mystery surrounding his father’s death. His effort to protect his son becomes closely tied to the investigation into whatever is lurking beneath the water.

The series was filmed in Newfoundland, Canada, using the region’s coastal setting as a central part of the story. Hartnett and Heaton also immersed themselves in local culture while preparing for their roles.

When Does ‘Below’ Premiere on Netflix?

Below will premiere on Netflix on October 8, with all six episodes of the limited series arriving at once. The series is also scheduled to have its world premiere as part of the Primetime program at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10.

Netflix describes the series as a thriller centered on a coastal town under attack from a mysterious sea creature, with themes involving family, community and a way of life facing change.
